CM Punk captured the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing, but Punk’s moment of glory was short-lived. The champion announced on the following episode of Rampage that he would be taking time off to deal with an injury, and it was also confirmed that an interim AEW World Champion would be crowned in his absence.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that CM Punk underwent surgery on June 8th and the surgery went well. When the surgery was done the injuries to the bones was worse than expected, but they were able to fix everything. The belief is that CM Punk will be back before the end of the year, but there’s no official timetable for his return.
Neither AEW nor Punk confirmed that he had a broken foot as it’s AEW policy not to say specific injuries unless it has to do with changing previously advertised matches.
It’s not clear when the injury happened, but two notable were when Punk hit the guardrail while jumping into the crowd at the Kia Forum, and a springboard spot during the six man match that same night where he lost his balance. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
