The Undertaker is one of the most iconic wrestlers to ever step foot in the ring and this year at WrestleMania he’ll be taking on the one and only Roman Reigns. Undertaker has come a long way over the course of his career, and it took many years of long nights on the road and exceptional performances in the ring for him to reach his legendary status.
But as we all know, nothing happens overnight, and you have to start somewhere.
The Undertaker recently attended a Texas Longhorns practice session at the University of Texas and he treated the players to a rare, out of character, inspirational speech. During the speech he talked about how he got into the business, and he revealed that the only reason he got booked for a match was because he looked like Fritz Von Erich’s son (via For The Win).
“It was a very slow process. I used to go down to the old Sportatorium … For eight months, every Wednesday, I went down there and sat at the office. I watched them walk right by me, didn’t acknowledge me, didn’t say hello to me, didn’t tell me to get the hell in or get the hell out … One day, Fritz Von Erich walked in the door. Fritz Von Erich walked in, he looked at me, didn’t say anything but still, he walked in another room and I heard him say, ‘Who’s the big red-headed kid?’ … He says, ‘Let’s book him for Friday night.’ He booked me because I looked like his son. I was just in the right place at the right time, and my perseverance paid off, and all the doors that got slammed in my face, I got my start because I looked like the older son that he had lost, and that set me on my course.”
It’s not every day that The Undertaker steps out of the darkness to give an inspirational speech to some young up and coming football players, so hopefully the Texas Longhorns know exactly how lucky they are.
