Matt Hardy made 2016 his year as he captivated the entire pro wrestling world’s fascination with his Broken Universe persona. But when he made the leap back to WWE, Anthem Sports kept a tight grip on his beloved persona.
Although Matt Hardy spent thousands of his own dollars evolving his gimmick and putting it out into the world, apparently Hardy didn’t own his treasured persona. But after an intense legal battle and months of waiting for something to happen Woken Matt Hardy finally became a reality on WWE television. He wasn’t quite Broken, but this name sounded close enough to make this gimmick work.
Woken Matt Hardy set his sights on Bray Wyatt first because it was the Eater Of Worlds who first sent him into his current Woken tailspin. But once Hardy landed on his feet with his Woken Wisdom, it seemed the WWE Universe was in for a huge treat.
Hardy and Wyatt’s feud came to a grand crescendo during an Ultimate Deletion match and even though Michael Cole apologized for the segment beforehand there were still plenty of fans who loved every minute of it.
But there were still some rather enjoyable pieces that hit the cutting room floor so WWE gathered them all up to release an epic 18-minute version of the Ultimate Deletion match. If you watch this version closely you might notice a lot of nods to the past in the Hardy Compound as well as some great humor.
Only time will tell if fans will ever see another match on the Hardy Compound, but with Bray Wyatt’s character presumably evolving after being cast into the Lake Of Reincarnation we can only hope their paths will cross once more.
You can check out the match below and see for yourself, but it certainly looks like there is still plenty more WWE could do in this storyline from this point forward.
