When All Elite Wrestling first launched in 2019 Cody Rhodes was one of the faces of the company, but a lot has changed over the last few years. After his contract expired Cody decided to make the jump to WWE in 2022, and since then he’s been featured as one of the top stars in the company.
Cody Rhodes hasn’t said much about his AEW departure since leaving the company, but in his new documentary on Peacock he explained that he left due to a personal issue, and that his departure had nothing to do with money or other talent on the roster.
“I left AEW because of a personal issue—that’s it, but the byproduct of leaving AEW is the opportunity to go for the biggest dream I ever had, and the first dream I had in my life.”
Triple H also commented on Cody’s run with All Elite Wrestling in the documentary, and The Game referred to AEW as a “secondary promotion” while prasing The American Nightmare.
“To then take that gamble again and say ‘This is not what I wanted to be, I didn’t grow up dreaming of being the champion or the face of a secondary promotion, I wanted to be WWE Champion.’”
Cody Rhodes talks about why he really left AEW:
“I left AEW because of a personal issue—that’s it, but the byproduct of leaving AEW is the opportunity to go for the biggest dream I ever had, and the first dream I had in my life.”

Cody Rhodes has made it very clear that it’s his goal to win the WWE Championship, but unfortunately for Cody he was unable to capture the gold when he challenged Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. Only time will tell when, or if Cody will get another shot at the belt. Stay tuned for updates.
