John Cena’s WWE career has been a wild ride. When Cena first joined the main roster, he was a generic babyface, but people really started to take notice when he brought his rapper gimmick to the public, and fans really got behind John Cena.
Unfortunately for Cena, that all changed when he was drafted from SmackDown to Raw, and the fans started booing him despite the fact that he was supposed to be the top babyface on the red brand.
John Cena’s legacy has been defined by the reaction that he gets from the fans, and at this point it will always be 50/50 at best. Cena entered unchartered territory when he became a face that was both loved and hated, and Triple H offered him some words of encouragement after the fans turned on him.
“Fans will say that all the time — ‘I hate Roman Reigns,'” Triple H told ESPN. “They did it with [John] Cena, too. I remember telling Cena years ago, when it started happening to him, ‘Dude, what do you care? You’re the Yankees and the Red Sox at the same time.’ The place is sold out.”
Ironically Roman Reigns has just entered a feud with John Cena, and Reigns has been walking down a similar career path over the past few years. However, fans who are hoping to see Roman Reigns turn heel soon are sure to be disappointed.
“When people say, ‘They should just turn Roman,’ why?” said Triple h. “For the people that hate him, he’s already turned, and for the people that love him, they don’t want him to turn. And if we turned him, the people who hate him would switch to loving him, and the people who love him would switch to hating him.”
