A number of weeks ago WWE started teasing the fans by playing the song “White Rabbit” during breaks at TV tapings and live events. WWE started dropping other teasers as well by turning off the lights in the arena and quietly placing QR codes in the background that would lead to more clues.
The White Rabbit phenomenon became one of the most talked about angles in wrestling and it all led up to Bray Wyatt’s grand return at Extreme Rules.
During a recent interview with The Wrap, Triple H noted that the idea was to, “lead our audience down this literal rabbit hole of content to help build anticipation.”
“We asked ourselves how we could bring back Bray Wyatt in the most engaging way possible,” Triple H said. “It started with flickering lights in arenas and continued with the release of other Easter eggs. Like hidden QR codes within episodes of ‘SmackDown’ and ‘Raw’ that led viewers to more clues that kept them guessing, and tuning in, each week. It culminated in what we believe was a massive pay-off for our fans — and for WWE.”
Bray Wyatt made his return to SmackDown last week and he delivered an emotional promo for the fans in attendance. However, Bray’s promo was cut short when he was interrupted by a masked man who appeared on the show and said some sinister words before SmackDown came to an end.
