After last year’s Cruiserweight Classic tournament and the more recent success of the United Kingdom Championship Tournament, there has been a push to put more WWE Network exclusive tournaments on the streaming service. The rumor that WWE will be producing a female exclusive tournament has been making rounds since last year and the event was reportedly going to take place during the first quarter of 2017. However those plans have obviously been pushed back.
The idea of a WWE Network exclusive women’s tournament has recently picked up more steam as Triple H confirmed on the FOX Sports Wrestling Compadres podcast that the plans for a female tournament are still in the pipeline.
WWE officials have presumably been scouring the independent scenes around the globe looking for talent for quite some time now. The idea of a women’s tournament on the WWE Network would certainly fall in line with their recent efforts to legitimize women’s wrestling and such a network special is going to happen, but apparently it is all about finding the right place and timing to hold the tournament. Triple H confirmed during his appearance on the Wrestling Compadres Slamcast.
“The women, we’re probably going to do this summer, is what I’m hoping, and a lot of women performers just [reacted] when I said that, but that’s the plan anyway. And you know, again, much like cruisers, it’s to go scour the globe and maybe find the girls that are out there doing this that no one’s heard of, that no one has seen, that are like these diamonds waiting, and bring them up. And let’s see what they can do, and entertain people with the tournament, and let them be exposed to this new talent. And at the same time, just massively increase the opportunity and the talent pool for us, and for everyone, really.”
Triple H went on to say that he is not a fan of inter-gender matches and sees it more of a shock factor for smaller promotions. He explained that he didn’t think WWE fans are ready to see a man beat a women up in the ring and prefers to let the women stand alone on their own athletic abilities.
