WWE kicked off 2022 with the first ever Day 1 pay-per-view, and at the event fans saw Drew McIntyre face off against Madcap Moss. Drew McIntyre managed to pick up a big win over Madcap Moss, but he was later attacked by Moss and Baron Corbin backstage.
During the attack Baron Corbin and Madcap Moss ended up wrapping a chair around Drew McIntyre’s neck and smashing the chair. It was later announced that McIntyre suffered a cervical neck strain with severe contusions, and that the former WWE Champion will see an orthopedic cervical specialist.
PWInsider is now reporting that the storyline beatdown was written into the show because Drew McIntyre has been dealing with legitimate neck issues for weeks, and he will need to undergo medical testing. WWE wrote McIntyre off TV to be proactive.
There’s no word on how long he will be out for, but the hope is that his hiatus will only be short term. However, his status is said to be “up in the air” until he can get checked out.
It was also noted that several people pointed out how insanely hard Drew McIntyre has been working in recent weeks despite the neck injury, and that he’s been working multiple times during recent live events. One person commented on the situation saying that McIntyre “went down swinging” for the company.
It’s also being reported that McIntyre was wearing a neck brace when he left Day 1. Stay tuned for updates.
