The 30 man Royal Rumble match kicked off the Royal Rumble premium live event on Saturday night and the match was action packed to say the least. The match featured some of WWE’s biggest names, but Rey Mysterio did not compete.
Rey Mysterio’s music hit and he was supposed to enter the match at number 17. However, Rey never entered the match and Dominik Mysterio entered immediately after at number 18. Dominik came out holding his father’s mask which he ripped up on his way to the ring.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Rey Mysterio was injured during his match with Karrion Kross at the SmackDown tapings on Friday. Originally Rey Mysterio was set to compete in the men’s Royal Rumble, and there were supposed to be some teases for a potential WrestleMania match with Dominik.
WWE did the angle where Dominik came out with Rey’s mask to make it look like The Judgment Day beat up Mysterio before he could come out. It’s not known how serious Rey’s injury is but it was at least serious enough to keep him out of the Royal Rumble match.
