Top 10 Most Unforgettable Hell In A Cell Matches

Hell in a Cell is without a doubt one of the most epic matches in WWE history. At one point the words Hell in a Cell were associated with brutality and aggression and these matches were often used to blow off big feuds that had escalated out of control.

In today’s WWE the Hell in a Cell match is a lot tamer than it used to be thanks largely in part to the fact that it has its own gimmick pay-per-view which rarely matches up with the culmination of any good feuds.

Still Hell in a Cell has quite the legacy and quite the plethora of matches to choose from when you’re putting together a best of compilation. With that being said let’s take a look at 10 of the best Hell in a Cell matches in WWE.

10. Chris Jericho VS Triple H

Whenever Triple H and Chris Jericho step in the ring you know you’re getting something special and then when you raise the bar by putting them in Hell in a Cell you get something epic. These two have always had good chemistry and for years rumors floated around that they truly didn’t like it each other. Whether that’s true or not is anyone’s guess but these two threw caution to the wind and put on a match that will keep you on the edge of your seat bell to bell!

9. Randy Orton VS The Undertaker

Back in 2005 Randy Orton was at the peak of his career up to that point with his “Legend Killer” persona. He was the most vicious that he’s ever been in the WWE and when you give him an opponent like The Undertaker there’s no way it won’t end up being brutal. Here weapons get abused and blood flows. The Undertaker pushes a young Randy Orton to the limit and Randy pushes back.

8. Edge VS The Undertaker

Edge and The Undertaker had one of the best rivalries of the past few years. Seeing Edge hold his own in a feud with The Undertaker really solidified his status as an icon and taking him on in Hell in a Cell cemented it in history forever. The place that Edge’s character went when he was put in a match with The Undertaker was a place of insanity which turned out to be very entertaining for the fans. Edge takes The Undertaker to a whole new level here and even manages to spear him through the cage. This Hell in a Cell match is brutality at it’s best as Edge truly takes The Undertaker to the edge.

7. Triple H VS Cactus Jack

Whenever you pair Mick Foley’s name with Hell in a Cell you know he’s bound to do something crazy. Pair Mick Foley with Triple H and you have someone that’s equally as crazy. These two had perhaps one of the bloodiest rivalries of the Attitude Era. From their street fight at the Royal Rumble to this Hell in a Cell these two put each other on the map with matches like this. Mick Foley puts his career on the line in this epic Hell in a Cell.

6. Armageddon Hell In A Cell

Just stop for a second and see how many of the biggest stars from the Attitude Era you can name. Chances are that most of the ones you named are actually in this match. This match puts Kurt Angle against The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Rikishi and Triple H in a 6 man Armageddon Hell in a Cell match. No matter which way you look there’s always action taking place between two big name superstars and they take it to the limit in this one of a kind Hell in a Cell match.

5. The Undertaker VS Brock Lesnar

You can argue that there’s never been a wrestler that can truly match up pound for pound quite as close as Brock Lesnar does to The Undertaker. Brock Lesnar is one of the only superstars in WWE history that can really bring it to The Undertaker and this match proves it as they have what is easily one of the most brutal Hell in a Cell matches of all time.

4. Triple H VS The Undertaker

Triple H VS The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28 was truly the end of an era and if The Undertaker wanted to end his career right then and there no one would have blamed him. At WrestleMania 28 The Undertaker managed to go 20-0 at the most prestigious event in sports entertainment and he did it while telling a story that will last a lifetime. After facing Shawn Michaels twice at WrestleMania and retiring him at WrestleMania 26  The Undertaker then went on to face Triple H at WrestleMania 27 in a match which many feel stole the show. All three of these characters come back into the fold at WrestleMania 28 in this Hell in a Cell match which truly was the end of an era.

3. Shawn Michaels VS Triple H

Shawn Michaels and Triple H were once the best of friends but when it came time for them to engage in a rivalry against each other they made for the best of enemies. Triple H managed to lure HBK out of retirement and into what was one of the bloodiest feuds the company had ever seen as these former best friends attempt to tear each other apart. This match is only one of several gimmick matches that made up this feud but it is without a doubt one of the best ones not only of the feud but in Hell in a Cell history.

2. Shawn Michaels VS The Undertaker

They always say you never forget your first and that is completely true when it comes to Shawn Michaels VS The Undertaker in Hell in a Cell. These two managed to define the match and legitimize the gimmick like Shawn had done before with gimmick matchups like the ladder match. Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are responsible for putting on what is considered by many to be the greatest match of all time at WrestleMania 25 so if you’ve never seen this match up just imagine what they can do in Hell in a Cell.

1. Mankind VS The Undertaker

Was there ever any question what match would rank number 1 on this list? I didn’t think so. This match is synonymous with Hell in a Cell and without a doubt put the gimmick itself on the map. Mick Foley puts his body on the line here like no one ever before him has and manages to make you genuinely wonder about his physical and mental well being. There are moments in this match where it’s obvious by looking at The Undertaker’s face that even he can’t believe what’s going on. Mick Foley manages to get thrown off the side of the cage, fall through the roof, lose a tooth, bruise a kidney, and even land in a large pile of thumbtacks. If you think all of that sounds crazy well it gets even crazier because he ends up walking out of the arena under his own power and on his own two feet.

What was your favorite Hell in a Cell match?
