For years Cody Rhodes was one of the top stars in AEW, but he decided to return to WWE in 2022. Recently a documentary focusing on Cody’s career premiered on Peacock, and in the documentary Triple H made some interesting comments when he referred to AEW as a secondary promotion.
“To then take that gamble again and say ‘This is not what I wanted to be, I didn’t grow up dreaming of being the champion or the face of a secondary promotion, I wanted to be WWE Champion.’”
During a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Tony Khan responded to the comments and noted that he’s proud of where All Elite Wrestling is at while emphasizing that he has a lot of respect for Cody Rhodes.
“We certainly won’t be the secondary promotion at All In. We’re No. 1 in the UK, on TV and with a record gate. I have a lot of respect for Cody. I know these weren’t his words, to be fair, but we’re not secondary in a lot of markets — for the first time in a long time, WWE has been secondary in a lot of markets… I’m proud of where we’re at and we’re not taking a backseat to anybody.”
