Last year AEW and NJPW came together to put on the Forbidden Door PPV, and it’s been confirmed that Forbidden Door II will take place this year. Now that Mercedes Mone is the IWGP Women’s Champion there’s been a lot of speculation regarding whether or not she could appear at the show. During a recent Q&A at Planet Comicon, Mercedes discussed the show and she indicated that she could be open to making an appearance.
“Ooh, when is it (AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door)? Is it June? June or July? Okay. What day? I don’t know when the show is. Anybody know the date? I don’t know, we gotta see then,” Mercedes said. “June’s so far. I think I could be open, July might be open but, gotta get that phone call. Gotta get that phone call from unc.”
Tony Khan reacted to Mercede’s comments while speaking with Adrian Hernandez of The Bet in Las Vegas and he said that it’s encouraging to hear Mercedes Mone talk about the show.
“It’s a very encouraging thing to hear. I have so much respect for Mercedes. I think she’s such a great pro wrestler, and certainly, she’s one of the best in the world … And certainly, the shadow of Mercedes is looming large in New Japan Pro-Wrestling right now, and when AEW and New Japan clash at Forbidden Door, it’ll be very interesting to see what happens. And certainly, she’s one of their top stars in New Japan, so it makes for a very interesting situation going into Forbidden Door.”
