For a long time The Undertaker was a mainstay on WWE programming, but it became obvious to fans in recent years that The Deadman had more days behind him than he did in front of him in regards to in-ring competition.
Last year at WrestleMania 36 The Undertaker faced off against AJ Styles in the first ever Boneyard Match, and shortly after he confirmed that he had retired from the ring.
The former WWE Champion recently spoke to Sports Illustrated about his retirement, and he noted that he knew he was done about halfway through filming the Boneyard Match.
“About halfway through that night with AJ, I knew that was it for me. It became really obvious throughout the course of that night that I could no longer physically do things the way I want to do them, and I refuse to ever shortcut our fans.”
Undertaker went on to sat that he didn’t train a lot this year, and he’s at peace with retirement.
“Usually around October, I start getting my body ready for WrestleMania. I didn’t train a lot this year, purposely building in a safety net that way. So I was at peace with everything.”
