During the 1998 King of the Ring pay-per-view The Undertaker faced off against Mankind in a Hell in a Cell match that is still talked about to this very day. The match is considered by many to be iconic and at one point Mankind fell down to the mat after getting slammed through the top of the cell.
As Mankind was recovering Terry Funk entered the ring to check on his friend and he ended up eating a chokeslam from The Undertaker. During a recent interview with Complex The Deadman explained why he chokeslammed Funk even though the spot wasn’t originally planned.
“It’s just one of those things that happened. Obviously everyone was really concerned for Mankind going through there [the cell]. He was inches away from probably not getting up from that, so that’s why that all just happened [unplanned].”
“I don’t know what kind of shape Mick’s in, right? But then again you just can’t stand there and look around, so there’s a wrestler in the ring, somebody’s gotta get it! Somebody’s gonna get Chokeslammed, and Terry Funk, he was the recipient. Up he went and there’s the shoe. It’s funny that something the stature of that match, what an iconic moment of Terry Funk losing his shoe to a Chokeslam!”
It’s been a while since fans have seen The Undertaker on WWE programming, but it’s been confirmed that he will be part of the Monday Night Raw 30th anniversary show tonight. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
