The road to WrestleMania 40 has been full of twists and turns and business picked up a few months ago at the WrestleMania press conference when Cody Rhodes officially declared that he would be challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
The Rock followed up by joining The Bloodline and the group has been trying to take down Cody ever since. Seth Rollins offered to be Cody’s shield and it was determined that Cody & Seth would face off against The Rock & Roman in a tag team match during night one of WrestleMania 40. Ahead of the match it was announced that if Cody & Seth won then Cody would get a one on one match with Roman on Sunday night, but if Rock & Roman won then the title match on Sunday would be contested under Bloodline rules meaning anything goes.
Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns kicked the match off as the fans at Lincoln Financial Field sang Seth’s song. Roman and Seth went back and forth for a few minutes then Cody asked for the tag as Seth tagged Cody in. Cody went back and forth with Roman for a few minutes then Seth tagged in. The Rock extended his hand and Roman tagged the Final Boss into the ring. Seth Rollins clapped as The Rock entered.
The Rock dominated Seth Rollins then knocked him down and called for Cody Rhodes to enter the ring. The fans battled back and forth with dueling chants for “Rocky” and “Cody.” The American Nightmare managed to hit The Rock with a few strikes then he tagged in Rollins and they both double teamed The Rock in the corner. Reigns got in the ring and all four men started brawling on the outside. Rhodes battled Reigns up the ramp while Seth Rollins fought The Rock at ringside. The Rock told the referee that he’s the boss, so if he counts him out he’ll be fired. Rock and Rollins then fought into the crowd as Reigns and Rhodes battled at the top of the stage.
As Seth Rollins was trying to get back in the ring Roman Reigns knocked him down. Seth sold a knee injury as he fell then The Rock slammed his knee into the turnbuckle a few times. Rock tagged in Roman Reigns as Seth limped around the ring. Roman continued to target Seth’s knee as he wore The Visionary down.
Rock and Roman isolated Seth for several minutes. Roman went for the Superman Punch, but Rollins reversed it into a neckbreaker. Rollins then faced off against The Rock and he managed to hit a step up enziguri. Seth went to tag Cody, but Roman pulled Cody off the apron before he could tag in. The Rock then put Seth in the Sharpshooter. Cody appeared out of nowhere and slapped The Rock in the face. Rollins superkicked Rock then hit the stomp on The Great One.
The Rock tagged in Roman as Seth tagged in Cody. The American Nightmare hit the Disaster Kick followed by the Cody Cutter on Roman, but Roman kicked out. Cody went for Cross Rhodes, but Roman got out of it. Rhodes went for a springboard off the ropes right into a Superman Punch.
Roman went for a spear, but Cody reversed it into a roll up. Reigns kicked out, but Cody hit another Cody Cutter and Rollins tagged in while Cody was on the ropes. Rollins hit a Frog Splash which Roman kicked out of. Cody tagged back in and he and Rollins hit Roman Reigns with double superkicks. Rollins hit the stomp and Rhodes followed up with Cross Rhodes. It looked like they had it won, but The Rock pulled the referee out of the ring and Roman Reigns hit Cody with a low blow then a spear. However, Cody kicked out.
The Tribal Chief put Cody in the guillotine. Cody Rhodes fought back, but The Rock grabbed his feet. Roman locked in the guillotine again then Rollins hit Reigns with the stomp. The Rock threw Rollins out of the ring then tagged in. Rock looked at Mama Rhodes then grabbed the belt and talked trash to her. The Great One got back in the ring and Cody hit him with the Bionic Elbow. Rock came back with a spinebuster to set up The People’s Elbow. As Rock was about to hit The People’s Elbow, Cody got up and hit him with the Cody Cutter. The American Nightmare went for the Cross Rhodes on The Rock only to get hit with a Superman Punch from Roman Reigns.
Cody tried to stand up and Roman went for the spear, but Rollins moved Cody out of the way at the last second and Roman speared The Rock by accident. Rollins then hit a Pedigree on Roman while Cody hit a Pedigree on The Rock at the same time. They both went for the pin, but Rock and Roman kicked out at two.
Rollins went to the top rope and hit a cross body on Reigns to the outside. Rhodes battled Rock at the announce table. The Rock set Cody up on the announce table and talked more trash to Mama Rhodes. He went for the Rock Bottom, but Seth Rollins grabbed Rock’s leg. Cody then put The Rock through the announce table when he hit him with the Rock Bottom then Roman Reigns speared Seth Rollins through the barricade.
Cody Rhodes threw The Rock back in the ring as Roman Reigns hit Cody with the drive by. Roman tagged in and exchanged strikes with Cody. The American Nightmare hit the Cross Rhodes twice then went for a third, but The Rock hit him in the back with the belt. Rock tagged in and hit Cody with the Rock Bottom. He went for The People’s Elbow once again and this time he connected. The Great One then pinned Cody to win the match.
