The Rock stepped away from WWE for 8 years, and during that time John Cena stepped up and became the face of the company. As the face of the company, Cena took it upon himself to call The Rock out, and The Great One didn’t like that very much.
However, whether you agree with Cena’s methods or not, he got the job done, as Rock eventually returned and faced John Cena at WrestleMania 28 and WrestleMania 29.
The Rock and John Cena worked well together, but there was clearly some tension between the two of them, and Rock recently confirmed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live that their rivalry was very real.
“In the world of wrestling as you guys know, it’s fictionalized, it’s a tv show. But we had our rivalry, and now we can look back on it, it was so real. Like we had real problems with each other. We really did, which, by the way, led to us breaking WWE records with our pay-per-views, but like, we had real issues with each other. Now what’s great about our relationship is, he’s one of my best friends. We talk all the time. I’m rooting for him to win.”
All’s well that ends well because Rock and Cena seem to be on better terms now, and Cena has even gone on record saying that he was stupid for not understanding what The Rock was trying to accomplish with his acting career.
Cena has since changed his perspective, and he’s also followed in Rock’s footsteps by pursuing a career as an actor.
Rock hasn’t been active in the ring as of late, but perhaps we’ll see these two face off again on the big screen someday.
