Sting has created quite the legacy for himself in the professional wrestling business, and at one point he was the face of WCW.
After WCW ended in 2001 there were plenty of fans out there who were hoping to see Sting join WWE, but he didn’t end up joining the company until 2014.
During a recent episode of the AEW Unrestricted podcast the former WCW Champion talked about how he negotiated with Vince McMahon about a year after WCW folded, but talks fell apart when lawyers got involved.
“After [WCW] ended, we never did talk. There was never any discussion, at least not immediately after. It was, maybe, a year after that Vince reached out and we had a conversation and talking with Vince was always good. But then you get his group of attorneys and my attorney and it all kinda falls apart. Long story short, I wasn’t willing to make the commitment that he wanted.”
Ultimately Sting decided to sign with TNA, and he revealed exactly what Vince McMahon said to him when he heard the news.
“I’ll never forget, I’m talking to him on the phone and I say, ‘Vince, I’m gonna go to TNA.’ He said, ‘The thought of you and the legacy that you leave behind! And you going to TNA is just BLAH!’ He literally said, ‘BLAH!’ Then I end up working for him a few years later.”
Sting recently made his AEW debut, and it’s been confirmed that he’s signed a multi-year contract with the company. It’s also rumored that there are plans for Sting to wrestle in AEW.
