“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is one of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling, and he sold massive amounts of merchandise and tickets during his time with WWE.
Nowadays many of the wrestlers on the WWE roster wrestle a different style with moves that are more athletic, and matches that are faster compared to the style that Austin wrestled during the Attitude Era.
Steve Austin recently reflected on his legacy during an appearance on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast, and he said that his legacy is not that he was a great wrestler, but that he sold tickets.
“I had blinders on back in the day. I was all about selling tickets,” Austin said via WrestlingInc. “It took being away from the business. It took me a long time just to be able to see what I did. And now I get asked the legacy question or what I thought I meant to the business or where am I, and I like to keep it… my new answer, the way I really feel about it, long story short, bottom line is I brought grey to a black and white world. And the last bottom line is ‘Stone Cold’ sold tickets. That’s it. I sold tickets. And I was never a great wrestler, but I’m one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot in the squared circle. So bottom line is if people want to ask me where I fit. I just say, ‘I sold tickets, a s–t pile of them.'”
Great wrestler or not, Steve Austin will still go down as one of the greatest WWE Superstars of all time.
Even though he’s been retired since WrestleMania 19, Austin still remains one of the most popular wrestlers to ever lace up the boots, and that’s the bottom line.
