Steve Austin had one of the most successful WWE runs of all time and throughout his career he faced off against some of the biggest names in the business. The Texas Rattlesnake retired following his match with The Rock at WrestleMania 19 in 2003 which means he wasn’t an active competitor by the time John Cena was ascending to the top spot in the company.
During a recent appearance on the Out of Character podcast with Ryan Satin, Steve Austin praised John Cena while saying that a potential match with Cena would have been special.
“God man, Working with him would’ve been a highlight and I had a bunch of highlights and it would’ve been a real special thing because there’s something about John that people get so invested in his matches. He’s a very special talent. It would’ve been great to have a match with him but will it ever happen? No. But I think very highly of John.”
Even though Austin retired in 2003 he did come out of retirement for one more match last year when he defeated Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38. So far WWE has given fans no indication that Austin will be returning to the ring this year at WrestleMania 39. John Cena however will be in action as he’s currently set to challenge Austin Theory for the United States Championship on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
