Leg slaps have become quite common in professional wrestling, as they’re often used to create sound effects when wrestlers hit moves like a superkick. However, it was recently reported that WWE has banned the practice of leg slaps.
Shawn Michaels is certainly someone who knows a thing or two about superkicks, as he put many opponents away with Sweet Chin Music, and during a recent interview with The New York Post the Hall of Famer admitted that he used to do leg slaps as well.
Michaels also talked about the current state of the business, and why he thinks it’s important to find a balance between the new and the old.
“Clearly, I look back and I go, ‘OK I did it. I just did one.’ I’m always of the cloth. I can remember when I started [doing leg slaps], people telling me, ‘Too fast, too much, too this,’ and there’s a balance there. They were right in some respects and at the same time, the business also evolves and changes. Football isn’t played the same. Basketball isn’t played the same, so I don’t know. I’m somebody that embraces those changes. I feel like somewhere in the middle and balance is so important. I appreciate the style of today. I appreciate the athleticism of the performers of today. Are they perfect? No. But neither were we.”
One way or another it was recently reported that WWE has been putting “do not slap leg” signs up backstage at WWE events, so it doesn’t sound like the practice is going to be used in WWE anytime soon.
