After shocking the WWE Universe by being a first round Raw draft pick a few weeks ago, Finn Balor then incredibly became the number one contender to the new Universal Championship on his debut night on Raw.
Balor faces off against former two time WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the newly unveiled Championship in a match that the WWE Universe has never seen before.
Rollins has never faced Balor in a one-on-one match because both stars have been on separate brands for the best part of their careers, but even though WWE have set up a predictable rivalry between the two stars, it is also one that could be absolutely brilliant.
Rollins was the first ever NXT Champion, Balor then went on to become the longest reigning NXT Champion. Rollins was main eventing WWE at its peak over the last few years whilst Finn Balor is considered to be one of the reasons that NXT became the phenomenon that it currently now is.
Both men were huge stars on the Independent Circuit with Rollins winning World Championships with ROH whilst Finn Balor, known as Prince Devitt took both the British and Japanese Wrestling scene’s by storm.
The two could well be considered wrestling soul mates, they were destined to come face to face at some point and finally it is happening. The main face of NXT will collide with the undisputed face of WWE.
Whilst many don’t considered Balor to have a chance in this match with Rollins becoming well known as the kind of wrestler that makes history with so many firsts, the first ever Universal Championship reign could well be in his future.
Rollins was the first ever United States and World Champion and he was also the first superstar to ever cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase add that to him being the first ever NXT Champion and that would be considered a long list of accomplishments over a short WWE career.
Whilst Finn Balor hasn’t exactly had a record shy career himself, longest reigning NXT Champion, he has main evented more NXT Takeover events than any other superstar and had his first ever ladder match in his lengthy career at last year’s NXT Takeover Brooklyn event.
Both men have had short WWE careers so far but lengthy wrestling careers outside of the company, many fans have been waiting for the two stars to collide for the past few years so thankfully it does seem that WWE are listening to fans.
With Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn rehashing their storied Independent rivalry from a few years ago, it seems right that Balor and Rollins are finally being given their own opportunities.
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this match is set to steal the show at SummerSlam in less than three weeks time, with only three other matches currently announced that see Smackdown boast the WWE Championship match between Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler.
Raw superstar Brock Lesnar up against SmackDown’s Randy Orton in a match that is 14 years in the making and Sasha Banks facing Charlotte with the WWE Women’s Championship on the line.
It was obvious that WWE were going to have to start considering what the fans wanted in order to keep ratings and views up after the brand split but between Ziggler an Ambrose’s fantastic promo’s on SmackDown and Balor and Rollins’ build up on Raw, fans are definitely getting what they have always wanted.
Looking at the match from a neutral point of view it would make sense to have Rollins once again be the victor and allow Balor to chase him for the next few months but it could also work with The Demon gaining a victory and proving that WWE have some faith in him despite only just being promoted.
This could be the reason why this match has become a fantasy match for many of the WWE Universe, it is hard to predict what is going to happen but it is obvious that the match will be the stand out one of the night and hopefully lead onto an incredibly personal rivalry heading into the final few months of the year.
