WWE SummerSlam aired live from MetLife Stadium on Saturday night and it was an action packed show. Roman Reigns made his return to the ring, and Jelly Roll made his in-ring debut during the event. The show also featured a huge main event as CM Punk challenged Gunther for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the final match of the night.
CM Punk made his entrance first to a big reaction from the fans. The Ring General then walked down to the ring and the announcements were made as the match kicked off.
Punk had Gunther well scouted as he managed to dodge a chop early on in the match. Gunther got Punk in the corner and Punk managed to block another chop. After a few minutes Gunther finally connected with a chop and he got the upper hand. Punk tried to fight back, but Gunther took him down with a big boot. The Ring General got Punk on the ropes and he continued to strike him with chops and another big boot as he dominated the match. CM Punk attempted to fight back but struggled as Gunther remained firmly in control.
Gunther put CM Punk in a headlock as he talked trash and told the Second City Saint he’s never going to be WWE World Champion. Punk tried to lift Gunther up on his shoulders, but Gunther got out of it. CM Punk attempted a Sharpshooter only for Gunther to block it and apply a Sharpshooter of his own.
Punk managed to get out of the hold and he rolled Gunther over as he finally locked the Sharpshooter in on The Ring General. However, Gunther got to the ropes to break the hold.
Finally Punk got some offense in as he exchanged strikes with Gunther. He went for the running knee in the corner, but Gunther countered. Gunther tried to lock in a sleeper and Punk blocked it then hit a side Russian leg sweep. CM Punk caught Gunther with the running knee again followed by a bulldog for a two count.
The Second City Saint went to the top for an elbow drop and Gunther knocked him down with a chop then slammed him to the mat. Gunther connected with a frog splash off the top as Punk kicked out at two.
Punk tried for the GTS and Gunther countered with a powerbomb. Gunther then connected with a dropkick and another powerbomb. CM Punk kicked out at two. Gunther placed CM Punk on the top turnbuckle then chopped him and put his boot on Punk’s face. Punk fell to the outside and Gunther threw him into the ring post.
The Ring General stood up on the announce table and celebrated for a second as CM Punk grabbed his leg causing Gunther to fall to the ground. When Gunther stood up he was busted open and the announcers questioned if his nose was broken. CM Punk targeted Gunther’s nose as he hit him in the face then connected with another running knee.
Punk went to the top rope and finally connected with the elbow drop. He called for the GTS, but Gunther reversed it into a sleeper. Punk got out of it and connected with a GTS. Gunther didn’t fall down so Punk went for a second GTS. He managed to connect then he pinned Gunther to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
CM Punk got emotional as he held up the belt then Seth Rollins’ music hit. Seth came out to the stage on crutches. Paul Heyman held up the Money in the Bank briefcase as Seth talked trash. Rollins started to leave then he dropped the crutches and turned around. He removed the brace from his leg, grabbed the briefcase and ran down to the ring.
Punk tried to hit Rollins with the GTS as Rollins beat him down and Rollins hit Punk with the briefcase several times. Seth Rollins officially cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase and the bell rang. Rollins hit a Stomp on Punk then pinned him to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
After the impromptu title match Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed celebrated with Seth Rollins as the show went off the air.
