Last week one of the most iconic stables in wrestling history, D-Generation X, celebrated its 20th anniversary. DX formed 20 years ago, and obviously they did something right, because people are still talking about the group to this very day.
Sean Waltman was a key member of DX during the Attitude Era when he was known as X-Pac. He recently spoke with Uproxx about the anniversary, and he noted that he looks back with fondness on his run with DX, but he added that he now views some of the things he did as embarrassing.
Luckily Waltman has few regrets, but he did admit that the infamous skit where DX impersonated the Nation is something that he views differently now.
“Actually the only thing that I can honestly say I really regret now is the blackface thing. I did not understand. Here’s the thing: I consider myself pretty well, for somebody that didn’t go to high school, pretty well educated. I know a lot of things, but I never saw an actual minstrel show, blackface thing. Recently, I saw something about it and I was horrified, horrified at how mean-spirited all that stuff was. I look at it way different now.”
During the Attitude Era it was rumored that Val Venis was being considered for a spot in DX, and Waltman confirmed the rumor a few months ago during an interview.
Waltman elaborated on why it didn’t happen, and he revealed that the idea to add Val came up after Triple H turned heel.
“Oh, Val Venis. Well, it’s because Hunter turned. For some reason they thought that we needed somebody to replace [him], to fill that spot. No. Val’s great, but it wasn’t right. It wouldn’t have been — It wouldn’t have felt right either. It would have looked like, “Oh. They’re just trying to fill Triple H’s spot.”
