A few weeks ago The Rock made his return to WWE while he was shooting scenes for “Fighting With My Family” at the Staples Center. Rock didn’t appear on Raw, but he did appear in front of the live crowd in Los Angeles after the show, and he gave the fans in attendance a moment they will never forget.
The fans started chanting for CM Punk, as they often do, so The Rock responded by pulling out his phone and calling Punk from the middle of the ring. WWE officials weren’t too happy about The Rock going rogue, and before The Rock made the call, he made a comment to someone telling them that his mic better not get cut.
Former WWE star Sean Waltman was at the Staples Center and on a recent episode of his show, X-Pac 12360, he talked about what the reaction was like backstage when The Rock called CM Punk. He didn’t reveal who said it, but he did confirm that someone was calling for The Rock’s mic to be cut.
“Obviously there was controversy over The Rock calling CM Punk. I was up in the gorilla position when all that was going down… I’m not going to say who was on the headset saying, cut his mic, cut his mic. Doesn’t he realize we’re in a lawsuit with this guy? But nobody was really, like mad mad. But it was just like, come on. It was one of those things.”
Although Sean didn’t reveal who was on the headset, fans can probably put two and two together. Vince McMahon calls the shots in WWE and he’s probably the only person that has the grapefruits required to try and shut The Rock down.
One way or another, The Rock got to make his call and every terrified WWE official backstage probably let out a collective sigh of relief when CM Punk didn’t pick up.
One things for sure, the suits at WWE owe Punk’s dog Larry a big thank you. If it wasn’t Larry’s birthday and Punk didn’t decide to treat him to a walk moments before The Rock called, there’s no telling what kind of pipe bomb Punk would have dropped.
