Samoa Joe and CM Punk both made a name for themselves on the independent scene before moving on to bigger things. Punk went on to become the longest reigning WWE Champion of the modern era, and Joe recently joined the WWE main roster, but fans still talk about the matches they had together prior to their WWE runs.
For a long time fans were hoping to see Samoa Joe and CM Punk face off in a WWE ring someday, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon because CM Punk is no longer with the company. Samoa Joe recently spoke to Helen Yee of Eyes on the Game and she asked Joe if he had spoke to Punk about his main roster debut. Joe confirmed that he still keeps in touch with Punk and he noted that Punk had a very sarcastic answer when he found out about his main roster debut.
“Punk obviously he was here for a long time and he did pretty well for himself and has moved on to other things. When I came here I remember for years he was kind of championing my cause to be here in WWE and to see me now he’s kind of like, ‘Oh of course, the minute I’m not there you’re here now.’ Between me and him it’s always been an interesting relationship. We’re kind of like brothers that fight all the time. There’s never a dull moment when it comes to our conversation.”
CM Punk remains committed to pursuing a career in MMA, but at this point his future with UFC seems to be up in the air following his loss at UFC 203. Punk doesn’t seem to have any desire to return to WWE right now, but Samoa Joe noted that “nothing’s impossible” when asked if we might see the two former opponents clash once again in the future.
As for current WWE stars Samoa Joe could face, he was also asked about a potential match with John Cena. Originally it was rumored that WWE officials were considering booking Joe in a match against Cena at WrestleMania 33, but with the way things are going it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
Samoa Joe recently signed his Raw contract and John Cena is a member of the SmackDown roster. Although Samoa Joe and John Cena are on two separate brands, Joe noted that he would love the chance to face off against Cena once again.
“18 years ago myself and John Cena had a match and based off of that match WWE inevitably hired him and brought him along. I went my own separate way. It’s been 18 years since John and I have been in the ring together. John throughout early in my career has been a close personal friend. We drove a lot of miles together and it would be an absolute pleasure to reunite in the ring and once again smash him in the face, and take everything from him.”
AJ Styles has come a long way since making his WWE debut. He’s a former WWE Champion and he’s feuded with big names such as Roman Reigns and John Cena, but is AJ being buried? Some people out there seem to think so and we’re talking about it on this week’s episode of Still Real Radio which you can listen to below or on iTunes by clicking here.
