Sami Zayn successfully defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 36 last month, but he hasn’t appeared on WWE programming since.
This week it was announced on WWE Backstage that since Sami Zayn is not able to compete and defend the title he has been stripped of the Intercontinental Championship, and the belt has been declared vacant.
It’s been announced that a tournament to crown a new champion will kick off Friday night during SmackDown. Brackets for the tournament have not been revealed.
It was recently reported that Sami Zayn has not been been working WWE TV tapings due to concerns over COVID-19. It’s not clear at this point when he might return.
Stay tuned for updates.
