Sami Zayn Defeats Gunther, Wins Intercontinental Championship At WrestleMania

Gunther has become one of WWE’s top stars in recent years and he’s managed to make history by becoming the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time. The Ring General has taken on all comers since he became champion and he’s dominated the competition.

Everyone has been wondering who could finally be the one to defeat Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship and Sami Zayn challenged the Ring General for the belt at WrestleMania 40 on Saturday night.

Before the match started Sami Zayn was shown backstage as his wife and son encouraged him. Chad Gable then showed up and told him to go out there alone because he’s got this. Gable then told Sami not to forget that he owes him a favor. The cameras followed Sami as he walked toward the entrance area and Kevin Owens was waiting for him. Owens hugged Sami and psyched him up before he walked out to make his entrance into the stadium.

Gunther then made his entrance with Imperium at his side, but Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser stayed at the top of the ramp as Gunther made his way toward the ring.

When the match kicked off Gunther dominated early on as Sami’s wife cheered him on from ringside. Sami tried to make a comeback as he got Gunther in the corner and went for his finisher, but Gunther dropkicked him then hit a powerbomb for a two count. Gunther delivered a big boot to Sami in the corner and he started talking trash to Sami’s wife. Sami then powered through and finally connected with the Helluva Kick, but Gunther kicked out. Gunther hit a clothesline followed by two powerbombs. Sami Zayn managed to kick out as Gunther looked on in disbelief.

Gunther continued to beat Sami down and taunt Sami’s wife who was sitting in the front row. The Ring General hit a powerbomb then a splash from the top rope followed by a second splash from the top rope. Gunther went to the top for a third splash, but Sami hit the Helluva Kick followed by a brainbuster onto the top turnbuckle.

Sami Zayn then hit the Helluva Kick again followed by yet another Helluva Kick to put Gunther away and win the Intercontinental Championship.
