Last year AJ Styles walked into the Royal Rumble with the WWE Championship in his hands and he defended the belt against John Cena. Unfortunately for Styles, he didn’t walk out of the event with the belt, as Cena managed to defeat him and capture the WWE Title for the 16th time in his career.
Now AJ is set to walk into the 2018 Royal Rumble with the title, and he will be defending it, but the circumstances are very different this time around.
SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan recently announced that AJ Styles will be defending the belt in a handicap match against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have been on the same page ever since Sami turned heel at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view back in October, but it seems that they may not be on the same page much longer.
CageSideSeats reports that there’s talk that the handicap match for the WWE Championship could lead to another feud between Owens and Zayn.
Wrestling fans know that Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have a very long and interesting history together, and they’ve switched from being friends to enemies several times, so it seems that it’s only a matter of time before their friendship falls apart again.
With WrestleMania season right around the corner, it will be interesting to see what’s planned for Zayn and Owens, and who ends up playing the heel if their feud is rekindled.
