When CM Punk debuted with AEW in 2021 everyone knew that it was inevitable he would eventually be in the title picture. Punk challenged for AEW World Championship for the first time at Double or Nothing in 2022 and he ended up defeated Adam Page to win the belt.
Recently there’s been a rumor going around claiming that Adam Page was supposed to win the match until CM Punk pressured Tony Khan into changing the finish. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that’s not true as CM Punk was always planned to win the title match. It was noted that Tony Khan wanted the title on CM Punk months earlier, but that had nothing to do with CM Punk pressuring him.
It’s certainly no big secret that CM Punk has had his issues with Adam Page as he publicly aired his grievances with Hangman during the post-show media scrum following All Out in September of 2022. Punk has been out of action due to injury since All Out, and it’s not clear at this point in time if he’ll be returning.
