Rob Van Dam is the only man to ever hold the WWE Championship and the ECW Championship simultaneously, but unfortunately for RVD both of his title reigns were short-lived.
RVD had to drop the belts after he was arrested with 18 grams of weed in his bag and WWE suspended him. The former champion went into detail about the situation during an appearance on the Steve Austin Show, and he noted that he warned WWE officials before he was given the belts.
“For everybody who says how much I was held back, and how wrong that was for my career, first off, I gave them plenty of chances to not put me on the forward foot and plenty of warnings that I would f–k it up. And then, when I did finally get the championship, I f–ked it up. I f–ked it up.”
Van Dam went on to say that when his 30 day suspension was up he asked Paul Heyman to ask Vince McMahon if he could have more time off, but Heyman refused to ask.
“I was suspended for 30 days. I had to drop both of the championships. And I don’t know if I was fined on top of that or not. But I was pretty much in my own world. But at the end of the 30-days, I called Paul [Heyman] and I asked him if he would ask Vince if I could have some more time off. And he was like, ‘I’m not going to ask him that – he’ll be offended because [the suspension] is supposed to be a punishment,’ but I was enjoying being home because I was sobering out.”
Unfortunately for RVD his title run didn’t exactly work out all that well, but he still seems to be on good terms with WWE, as he returned to WWE for another run from 2013 to 2014, and he made a brief appearance on the Raw reunion show last year.
