When John Cena isn’t on WWE television it doesn’t mean he’s taking it easy by any means. Of course hanging out on a movie or tv set waiting for the production people to get ready for Big Match John to recite some lines is probably way easier than taking a bump in the ring.
The fact is John Cena is shaping up to be a unique superstar capable of doing way more than just spouting a promo or executing an Attitude Adjustment at this point. That makes it so much more special when he returns to WWE.
The new season of Cena’s Fox reality TV show American Grit came back this week and WWE plugged it way more than they did last year. It might be that John asked them to promote his show or WWE is just warming up the the idea of Cena working elsewhere as long as he comes back to do his thing in the ring. So American Grit was pretty heavily promoted by WWE.
But as it would turn out the promotional machine of WWE didn’t help the ratings for American Grit. The second season premier only did 1,114,000 viewers which is down considerably from the 2,430,000 viewers the first season’s debut episode did.
We can only assume Fox isn’t happy with these new numbers but over one million people still isn’t anything to sneeze at. Maybe people assumed that even if they watched the show they still couldn’t see John Cena (see what I did there?).
For whatever reason, American Grit still could have done way better numbers. The fact is the premiere episode of season two is the lowest rating American Grit has ever received.
Maybe it was the move to Sunday night from Thursday or it could have been in direct competition with something people would have rather seen like the Stanley Cup Finals. But the ratings probably need to pick up soon if John Cena wants a third season of American Grit.
