Asuka is no longer NXT Women’s Champion after having to relinquish the title due to injury. Even though her broken collarbone isn’t a career ending injury it’s going to keep her off television long enough for this to make sense.
It would seem Asuka is on her way to WWE’s main roster. Whichever brand she winds up on she’s sure to make waves. But the problem persists about what they’re going to do with the newly vacated NXT Women’s Championship.
“I do know it was talked about that the [finals of the Mae Young Classic] will be for the championship,” Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio. “That’s not official but it’s absolutely something that’s been talked about. They could also do Ember Moon against the winner or they could do — I don’t see them doing two tournaments, you know what I mean?”
“I could see like them just going with the [Mae Young Classic] winner, why not? Go with that and Ember Moon can challenge whoever that is or somebody else could challenge. I don’t like the idea of [Asuka] not giving the rub to the next person but she’s injured and she’s gonna be out for a couple months.”
Although it’s still up in the air, it looks like NXT has a little bit of time to figure it out. But they need to put the NXT Women’s Title on someone since Asuka is now headed to the main roster.
Whether or not they simply give the title to the winner of the Mae Young Classic or they set up a #1 contender’s situation this strangely worked out timing-wise because they needed to offer something to the winner of the Mae Young Classic. The NXT Women’s Championship is certainly a nice thing to work for.
