The night after WrestleMania 34, Paige officially retired from in-ring competition after WWE officials decided not to clear her due to an injury she suffered at a live event a few months ago.
Paige’s goodbye to the WWE Universe was heartfelt, but the next night she appeared on SmackDown Live and Shane McMahon announced that the former Divas Champion was set to take over the General Manager position.
Paige recently talked about her career ending injury on E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness, and she noted that she didn’t tell many people about her retirement, but after she walked through the curtain she received a lot of support from Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.
But Paige quickly found out that her WWE journey wasn’t over when she was told to report to SmackDown Live the next night.
“It’s all secrecy. They didn’t want it to spoil it. They didn’t even tell me,” Paige said via Wrestling Inc. “They told me that I was going to SmackDown Live the next night. I had asked why, but they didn’t tell me. At that point, I had been touring a lot. Did a lot for WrestleMania week, so I was exhausted physically and mentally where I just wanted to go home so I was curious as to what was going on. I got to SmackDown the next day, Road Dogg, along with my writing team surround me and I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, am I about to be beat up. Do I owe you money?’ It was then they told me I was going to be the SmackDown general manager, but don’t tell anyone. We don’t even have the script yet.”
