Roman Reigns is the top star on Friday Night SmackDown at the moment, and he’s been Universal Champion ever since he won the title at the Payback pay-per-view back in September.
Adam Pearce tried to sign Roman Reigns up for a title defense inside the Elimination Chamber on the most recent episode of SmackDown, but Roman refused.
Instead it was decided that the winner of the Elimination Chamber match will receive an immediate shot at Roman’s Universal Championship.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that original plans called for Roman Reigns to defend his title inside the chamber, but that WWE decided to do an angle instead as a way to get more heat on Reigns.
There’s speculation that since Drew McIntyre is defending his title inside the chamber that WWE didn’t want to do the same thing with Roman, so they tweaked their plans.
As of right now Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Jey Uso, Kevin Owens, King Corbin and Sami Zayn have all been confirmed for the Elimination Chamber match.
