It’s been a while since fans have seen Goldberg in the ring as he last wrestled at the Elimination Chamber premium live event in 2022 when he was defeated by Roman Reigns. Last year Goldberg announced that he will be competing in a retirement match in 2025, but so far his opponent has not been confirmed.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that original plans called for Goldberg to face Gunther in his final match, likely after Gunther drops the title. It’s not clear at this point in time if that’s still the plan moving forward.

Goldberg recently shared an update on his retirement match during an appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show and he noted that the match is still expected to take place in 2025, although he doesn’t know exactly when it will happen.

“I’m going to jump in the ring and start sparring seven to eight days from now. I got to be smart about it. But yeah, 2025, it’s going to happen. And I don’t know who it’s going to be against. I don’t know when it’s going to be. But I guarantee you, whoever it’s against, they’re going to understand what it’s like being in there with Goldberg.”

Goldberg also talked about potentially facing Gunther inside a WWE ring when he added, “If it was Gunther and I that would be logical. There’s some heat there, obviously, that’s already been placed. And he’s the new generation. I’m the old generation. It’s kind of like a passing of the torch in a way.”
