The annual WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view aired live last week and the show celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Rock’s debut at the event. The Great One didn’t appear on the show, but WWE acknowledged him by promoting his movie Red Notice with a storyline tie in that saw a golden egg get stolen.
Eventually it was revealed that Austin Theory stole the egg, and Vince McMahon gave him a shot at Big E’s WWE Championship after the truth was revealed, but Theory failed to win the title.
Fightful Select reports that the original idea for the stolen egg storyline was “much worse” and it’s being said that the stakes were “much lower.”
One of the ideas pitched reportedly called for some sort of involvement with the 24/7 Title, but people associated with The Rock and Red Notice said that the tie in would not suffice, so WWE ended up adding Big E and the WWE Championship to the angle.
Vince McMahon was also added to the storyline to make good and make it feel more important. WWE reportedly made seven figures for the deal with Netflix for Red Notice, and the angle was part of that deal.
