This week’s episode of SmackDown was the first episode of 2025 and it kicked off in a big way. Cody Rhodes made his way down to the ring to cut a promo addressing Kevin Owens, but he was interrupted by Drew McIntyre. The Scottish Warrior claimed that he was there to help Cody. However, when Cody turned him down Drew left the ring and told Cody to watch his back then Kevin Owens attacked Cody from behind.
PWInsider is reporting that there were a lot of revisions to the opening segment on SmackDown. Originally the segment was set to start with a Kevin Owens promo with Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes eventually getting involved.
It’s being said that there was a lot of back and forth regarding what would work for everyone creatively, and ultimately the decision was made to move forward with the version that played out on SmackDown.
At one point there was talk of Jey Uso being a part of the segment, but they went in a different direction. The opening segment on Friday Night SmackDown was produced by Shawn Daivari.
