Original Plans For The WWE World Cup Tournament

Friday at WWE Crown Jewel, 8 Superstars will compete in the World Cup tournament to determine who is the best in the world.

Originally John Cena was set to compete in the tournament, but it was announced this week on Monday Night Raw that Bobby Lashley will be replacing Cena.

WWE also revealed the brackets for the tournament, and the first round matches feature Raw stars facing off against other Raw stars, and SmackDown stars facing off against other SmackDown stars.

But according to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, original plans called for the stars of Raw and SmackDown to be mixed up in the World Cup tournament (via Ringside News).

“The original plan was to kind of have the talents mixed up. In fact, at one point we were told that John Cena was going to wrestle Rey Mysterio in the first round and then the decision was made to keep the Raw and SmackDown talents segregated until the final because the final would also serve as sort of a preview of next month’s Survivor Series which will have a Raw vs SmackDown theme.”
