Over the weekend Tetsuya Naito, Kazuchika Okada, Kota Ibushi and Jay White competed in the Double Gold Dash tournament at Wrestle Kingdom 14 with the IWGP Heavyweight Title and the IWGP Intercontinental Title on the line.
Kazuchika Okada retained the IWGP Heavyweight Title against Kota Ibushi, and Tetsuya Naito defeated Jay White to win the Intercontinental Title.
Naito then beat Okada on night two to win both belts.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that original plans called for Kenny Omega to be part of the tournament.
If Omega wasn’t leaving for AEW, he was supposed to beat Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 13, leading to a match against Okada at Madison Square Garden where Omega would have retained the belt.
The plan was for Okada to win the IC Title and elevate it.
Ibushi and Omega would have faced off on night one, with Naito and Okada also facing off in the other title match.
The finish for the tournament still would have had Naito win both belts.
