On Sunday night Finn Balor won the WWE Intercontinental Championship during the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, and as he noted on Raw the next night, it had been a while since his last title win.
Balor last won a title when he became the first ever Universal Champion at SummerSlam in 2016.
Unfortunately fans never got to see his title run play out, because he vacated the title the next night due to injury.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the plan was to give Finn Balor a big push after winning the title and that the company was “way, way behind him” at the time.
It was also said that he likely wouldn’t have surpassed Roman Reigns as the top face in the company, but that the company wanted him to be close to that level.
At this point it’s not clear if WWE will ever get behind Finn Balor to that extent again, but he is the current IC Champion, so we’ll have to wait and see if the title run eventually leads to bigger things.
