NXT General Manager William Regal recently made a huge announcement when he informed the world that the first ever NXT North American Champion would be crowned at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans.
Regal then booked a ladder match for the show featuring EC3, Adam Cole, Killian Dain, Lars Sullivan, Velveteen Dream and Ricochet with the belt on the line, and Triple H recently unveiled the first look at the new title.
There was a lot of hype leading up to the ladder match at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, and the six NXT stars involved definitely delivered on Saturday night when they kicked off the show.
Ricochet appeared to be the big fan favorite heading into the match, as he got the loudest pop. Before the match even kicked off the fans chanted “this is awesome” as all six men stood in the ring.
There were some big, and painful looking spots in the match, and every competitor pulled out all the stops, but in the end it was Adam Cole who walked out with the gold.
The end of the match came when Lars Sullivan was climbing the ladder, but Ricochet jumped on his back from the ropes and they both went crashing down to the mat.
Ricochet then started to climb the ladder again, but Adam Cole slid in the ring and tipped over the ladder. After Ricochet fell off, Cole climbed the ladder and grabbed the belt to become the first ever NXT North American Champion.
