February has been a big month for wrestling fans as The Rock returned to WWE to seemingly set up a match with Roman Reigns on the February 2 episode of SmackDown. However, fans did not react well to the idea of Cody Rhodes giving up his match with Roman Reigns which led to The Rock turning heel and aligning himself with the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that as plans were in flux due to The Rock’s return Triple H scrambled to keep Cody Rhodes involved at all times.
Triple H reportedly pitched an idea that would have seen The Bloodline take out Cody Rhodes on the February 2 episode of SmackDown which would lead to The Rock vs. Roman Reigns being announced at the WrestleMania 40 press conference in Las Vegas. The follow up was that Cody Rhodes would eventually return and win the title.
It’s being said that Cody Rhodes was always going to get a match with Roman Reigns, but whether it would have been at WrestleManiavor shortly after is not clear.
After CM Punk got hurt Triple H made the call to put Cody Rhodes in the spot to set up Rhodes vs. Rollins and Rock vs. Reigns at WrestleMania. At that point WWE was not planning on having Cody Rhodes face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, but at some point after Mania.
Due to the backlash from fans The Rock made the call to turn heel and said that it was best for him to be out of the match with Roman Reigns and put Cody Rhodes in instead. It hasn’t been confirmed that it will be happening at this point, but The Rock has reportedly pitched a Rock & Reigns vs. Rollins & Rhodes tag team match for night one of WrestleMania 40.
