The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority board officially approved a plan today that would “temporarily” close down the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ, which was the site for the 2015 edition of SummerSlam until yesterday. According to NJ.com, the arena had been losing in excess of $7 million per year and will shut down for at least two years.
NJ.com also reported that the few remaining events on the arena’s schedule would be moved to the Prudential Center in Newark. Many local state Legislature and union members opposed the shutdown, with one union President stating that SummerSlam and other major events scheduled for this summer at the arena will skip the state and not move to the Prudential Center.
WWE has yet to officially announce where SummerSlam will be held this year. WWE released a statement last night noting that the company “is currently looking at alternatives,” and is confident that they will find “an equivalent, if not better, option for Summerslam.”
