Last Sunday at the annual WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view Bray Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman to become the Universal Champion for the second time in his career.
After the match Roman Reigns made his surprise return and speared both Wyatt and Strowman. A No Holds Barred triple threat match for the Universal Title was later announced for Payback, and the three stars clashed on Sunday night.
As The Fiend made his entrance he was attacked by Braun Strowman, and the two brawled without Roman Reigns as the commentators questioned where The Big Dog was. The camera cut to Alexa Bliss backstage who was watching the match on a monitor.
The match got intense, and at one point The Fiend hit Strowman with a superplex from the top rope and the ring imploded.
That’s when Roman Reigns made his entrance and signed the contract for the match with Paul Heyman by his side, and he pinned The Fiend twice, but The Fiend kicked out. Reigns also pinned Strowman, but Strowman kicked out, so he grabbed a steel chair and assaulted Strowman then pinned him again. Strowman kicked out.
The Fiend tried to apply the Mandible Claw on Roman, but Roman fought him off with a low blow. Roman then hit Strowman with a spear to win the Universal Championship.
After the match Roman Reigns walked up the ramp and celebrated with Paul Heyman to end the show.
