The New Day broke Demolition’s long-standing WWE record at midnight on Monday, and they are now recognised as the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in WWE History.
It was a busy Monday night for the trio as they were forced to compete in two hard-hitting matches with the final one main eventing Monday night Raw.
New Day had to overcome the team of Jeri-KO and Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins to retain their titles, but after fighting so hard to retain their titles just a few days ago, it seems WWE already has plans in place for The New Day to drop them.
The trio has held the titles for the past 18 months and now it looks likely that they will be dropping the titles on Sunday night when they face the team of Sheamus and Cesaro at WWE Roadblock: End of The Line.
Sheamus and Cesaro have finally managed to get on the same page recently and this could be the reason why WWE have decided to give them the incredible rub that a win over The New Day as record breakers would give them.
Teams like Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson or even The Shining Stars or The Golden Truth could have been the ones to gain the push that WWE was obviously going to give the team that finally conquered The New Day, but instead of an established team, it seems that WWE want it to go to a team that they have recently created.
Enzo Amore and Big Cass were many fans picks to finally defeat The New Day or even NXT’s The Revival when they finally appear on WWE’s main roster, but much like SmackDown’s current Tag Team Champions, it seems WWE officials like to put unlikely stars together and see how they jell as Tag Team Champions.
Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt have proved that they can co-exist, so the team of Cesaro and Sheamus should be plain sailing compared to the newest incarnation of The Wyatt Family.
That being said, this is still just pure speculation, there are rumours and reports that suggest that WWE is hoping to have The New Day drop their titles as soon as possible, which could well be against someone else Monday Night on Raw.
Other titles are look to be set up for straight forward wins for the champions with Rich Swann defending against The Brian Kendrick and TJ Perkins in the Cruiserweight Division. Sasha Banks defends her Women’s Championship against Charlotte in the first ever Ironwoman match on WWE’s main roster and Kevin Owens defends his Universal Championship against Roman Reigns.
There were reports that suggested Roman Reigns could be walking out of Roadblock as a dual champion, but it seems all those reports have been silenced by the possibility of Roman Reigns facing Braun Strowman at WrestleMania next year, and it looks like Kevin Owens could be walking into a feud with his former best friend Chris Jericho.
As already stated, this is mere speculation, New Day dropping the titles to Sheamus and Cesaro would give them a huge boost as a team but it will be made to look as though WWE have only let them hold the titles for as long as they have because they wanted to be rid of Demolition’s record.
Before the record was broken it was reported that Demolition were part of the on-going WWE court case that involved many concussion lawsuits and it seemed that this was WWE’s way of ensuring that Demolition were taken out of the history books for their part in it.
It could be deemed as slightly petty, but WWE decided to allow Nikki Bella to erase AJ Lee’s record for less, so it is never really straightforward for the world’s biggest wrestling company, and sometimes they do decide to do things out of spite.
Right now, New Day are the biggest tag team in WWE and if they are set to drop the titles that they have held for a year and a half to Sheamus and Cesaro, then WWE must have some huge hopes for the former singles competitors going forward.
