Mick Foley recently made his return to WWE programming this week on Raw, and fans will be seeing him again on Sunday at Hell in a Cell where he’s set to serve as the special guest referee for the Universal Championship match.
As many fans know, 2018 is a special year for Foley, because it’s the 20th anniversary of his infamous Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker.
The anniversary is something Foley has talked a great deal about this year, and during an appearance on Busted Open Radio he revealed that his appearance was something he pitched to Vince McMahon himself (via WrestleZone).
“I think having superstars returning is a good thing in doses and in this case, this was in the works well before WWE came to see my [stand-up] special… I had the chance to participate in the 25th anniversary of Raw and I texted Mr. McMahon and said, ‘I appreciate it, but I feel like I have something to offer if you can wait until September so I can do something more impactful for the 20th anniversary of Hell In A Cell.’ And so this is a case where I have a definite role.”
