As we prepare to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Monday Night Raw (although it actually happened with zero fanfare on January 11th) the WWE Universe is going to look back at some of the best moments from the show’s wild and illustrious history. Through all of the groundbreaking moments and chilling escapades, one segment still stands out as a true fan favorite when Mick Foley celebrated The Rock in a “This Is Your Life” segment.
The clip is still incredibly popular today although many didn’t realize how monumental it would be at the time. Even Mick Foley and The Rock didn’t know how it would change so much when it was being put together.
Mick Foley recently spoke to Bleacher Report and admitted the actors who were brought in to play the various parts couldn’t quite comprehend WWE’s improv acting style while they were doing a run through for the segment.
“‘OK, I’ll bring you out and The Rock will say something, and then I’ll bring you out and The Rock will say something,'” Foley told the actors. “These were professional actors, and they were like, ‘This is how you do it?’ I just looked at them and said, ‘Yeah. We’ll come up with something.'”
“I think that was part of the magic of that segment,” Foley said. “Everything was off the cuff, and I think The Rock and I played off each other really well.”
Mick Foley and The Rock ran 14 minutes over their allotted time, but once the numbers came in it was easy for Vince McMahon to forgive them as Foley continued explaining, “once the ratings were revealed, he was kind of like, ‘OK, you guys can do whatever you want from now on. And we had the freedom to pretty much do what we wanted.”
Try as they might, WWE will probably never be able to fully recreate the magic of that legendary segment and this rings true as Alexa Bliss and Bayley’s attempt at the same theme ended in utter disaster.
But the OG This Is Your Life segment from The Rock and Mick Foley will certainly live on no matter how many years Raw is celebrating as a program.
