WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley is one of the biggest legends that WWE has ever created, which could be why he and the many guises he became known as throughout his career are still considered to be part of one of the most popular characters of all time.
Whilst Foley was never the most technically gifted superstar when it came to wrestling ability, he had the heart of a champion and given the stunts he would regularly pull off, he was definitely braver than many of the men who have been given the opportunity to lift that title. Despite this, it seems that Foley believes that one of the most historic title wins of his career was a mistake by WWE.
The former General Manager of Monday Night Raw spoke to Sky Sports ahead of WWE’s flagship show’s 25th anniversary celebrations in just two weeks time and reflected on a moment that changed the course of his career almost two decades ago.
He said: “It meant so much to me on a personal level and I think I’m right in saying the fans have voted it the best ever Raw moment, I’m excited to have been part of so many big matches on Raw.
“But I saw me as champion as a mistake. I didn’t think it was a good idea. I always thought the challenger should be chasing the champion, and The Rock was a great champion. It was not seen as a big moment at the time. I saw it as a big moment for myself because I’d never dreamed of being champion, but we all thought it had been an exciting conclusion to a good show. We didn’t realise the force of the show until the ratings were revealed the next day.”
Foley’s championship win was one that proved to the WWE Universe that sometimes superstars can overcome the odds and achieve the unthinkable. Even though Foley believes it was a mistake, there were thousands of fans in attendance on that day that recall it being one of the best decisions in the company’s history.
