In 2017 The Hardys were riding a wave of momentum thanks to the popularity of the Broken Universe, and they became free agents after their relationship with Impact Wrestling fell apart.
In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania 33 there were a lot of rumors regarding where The Hardys might end up, and there were plenty of fans who wanted to see them return to WWE.
Matt and Jeff Hardy did end up returning to WWE on the Grandest Stage of Them All, but when they returned they didn’t return as the Broken Hardys, but instead as Team Extreme.
During a recent Twitch AMA Matt Hardy answered fan questions, and he revealed that Vince McMahon was not aware of the Broken Matt gimmick before they returned.
“He didn’t know anything about it. We worked out the deal with Triple H, on the down low. Triple H was great. Really, I think we came back because Vince was like, “Why are all these people saying Delete?”
Hardy went on to say that he had to explain the gimmick to Vince himself, and that the Chairman of the Board kept an open mind during their conversation.
“Explaining the Broken Matt story to Vince McMahon in 30 minutes was one of my favorite moments of all time. I had to sound like a madman to him. But he stayed open minded. They said they’ve give us a compound deletion fight, and he kept his word.”
Matt brought the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick to AEW when he joined the company last year, but he’s currently working under a different gimmick.
