This match was billed as legend Vs. icon match and that’s exactly what it was. The most recognizable name in wrestling history (Hulk Hogan) stepped into the ring with arguably the greatest performer in wrestling history (Shawn Michaels) at Summerslam 2005. This match is an absolute classic but not for the reasons you might think.
The rumor goes that this match was supposed to be the first in a series of matches between these two which didn’t pan out. Shawn agreed to do the honors and lose to Hogan in this match so long as Hogan agreed to fight him in a rubber match which Michaels would win. For some reason Hogan didn’t agree to the rubber match and Michaels was strong armed into taking the loss at Summerslam 2005.
Michaels knowing all of this ahead of time became quite bitter towards Hulk Hogan which was fairly obvious due to the nature of his promos leading up to the match but the best was yet to come. Shawn spends most of this match overselling the crap out of Hogan’s limited offense and all around just makes every bump he takes look ridiculous. Out of spite Shawn pretty much makes a mockery out of the entire match by doing everything in an over the top manner and the result is a very entertaining match.
